Dairy Free Hot Chocolate

Dairy Free Hot Chocolate

Dairy-free hot chocolate really isn't hard to make, but most hot chocolates (in coffee shops or mixes) use milk.

When I was little, I couldn't have hot chocolate out anywhere because I was allergic to dairy. Luckily, it's really easy to make your own!

Plus, I love the taste - so rich and chocolately... you can make it as sweet - or not - as you like, and you can play with different flavors.

Sometimes I like to add cinnamon and nutmeg, or maybe a bit of almond extract, or even some orange zest.

I also like making a hot carob drink, which is a totally different flavor that hot chocolate, but yummy in its own way. You don't need as much sugar when you use carob, because it's narually sweet.

I included directions for using a non-dairy milk, and also directions for the way I make it when I don't have any on hand and just use a starch powder. I used a pure, solid chocolate in the video, but I would normally make this with cocoa powder.

Option 1 Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp or so cocoa powder, pure solid chocolate or carob powder
  • 1 tsp stevia leaf, few drops stevia extract, 1 Tbsp unrefined sugar or 1 Tbsp maple syrup
  • 3/4 mug-full boiling water
  • 1/4 mug-full non-dairy milk

Option 2 Directions

  1. Put everything but the non-dairy milk in your mug, and stir to dissolve.
  2. Add the non-dairy milk and stir again to mix.

Option 2 Ingredients

  • 1 tsp arrowroot powder, maca powder, or another starch
  • 2 Tbsp cool water
  • 1 Tbsp or so cocoa powder, pure solid chocolate or carob powder
  • 1 tsp stevia leaf, few drops stevia extract, 1 Tbsp unrefined sugar or 1 Tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 mug-full boiling water

Option 2 Directions

  1. Mix the starch powder with a bit of water to dissolve, then add the rest of the ingredients and stir to dissolve.
