I wanted to make a chai-spiced smoothie and thought it would be funny to add some chia seeds to make a little tongue twister.

Chia seeds also have some awesome nutritional benefits, so it wasn’t just about the word play here. They’re a fantastic source of omega-3 fatty acids, as well as calcium, phosphorus and manganese.

An important note about their omega-3 content is that they have a ratio of 3:1 omega-3 in relation to omega-6 – which means they can offset the excess omega-6 in an average diet. (I wrote about this in more detail here)

I added some maca powder to my smoothie, which is a powder made from a root and said to help the body balance hormones and other beneficial things.

They sell maca drink in the streets in Peru, and I loved having it in the morning. It has a bit more of a bitter taste when I have it in North America (maybe because of processing?) but I still enjoy it.

If you don’t have spices, you could also brew some chai from loose leaf or a tea bag, and then add that in place of the water. You may just want to chill the tea if you do that.
