Low-sugar Granola Recipe

Low-sugar Granola Recipe

It can be really difficult to find store-bought granolas that aren’t loaded with sugar and oil.

This granola is only sweetened with pure fruit juice. If you want something a bit sweeter, you can replace part of the juice with maple syrup, or add some unrefined sugar.

I like it with this light sweetness, though, and the flavor of the juice will add its own character to your granola.

Today I used pineapple juice, which gave it a fun tropical taste. It would have gone perfectly with the coconut I usually add, but I was unfortunately out of coconut.

I usually use cranberry, which goes perfectly when I use dried cranberries.

I have a few favorite uses for granola. One is to sprinkle it on top of a fruit salad. Another is to mix it with my morning porridge to add a bit of crunch.

The best part about this granola is that it’s totally healthy and so easy to make.

Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup whole grain flour
  • 1 Tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground ginger (optional)
  • 1/2 cup sunflower seeds
  • 1/2 cup chopped almonds
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened coconut
  • 1 1/4 cup pure fruit juice (cranberry, apple, etc)
  • 1/2 cup raisins or dried cranberries
  • 1/2 cup goji berries (optional)

Directions

  1. Mix together all of the ingredients except the juice and dried fruit in a large bowl.
  2. Sprinkle the juice over the mixture, and stir it in until it’s just moistened. You might need a bit more or a bit less liquid, depending on how much your oats and flour absorb. To make your granola sweeter, you can replace half the juice with maple syrup.
  3. Put the granola on a baking sheet (the more spread out it is the better), and put it in the oven at about 350 degrees F. After about 15 minutes, turn the granola so that the middle gets dried out. Let the granola bake until it’s as crunchy as you want it.
  4. Bring the granola out of the oven and stir in the dried fruit.
  5. Let it cool, and then store it in an air-tight container for up to 2 weeks.
