Sweet And Spicy Red Cabbage Recipe

Red cabbage isn’t always everyone’s favorite, but this recipe packs a real punch that you will definitely enjoy!

Cabbage is a cruciferous vegetable, which is the same family as broccoli and kale, and is loaded with antioxidants. This means that they can help protect against cancer and aging. Try purple or green cabbage for different nutrients.

Sweet and Spicy Red Cabbage Recipe

  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 whole star anise
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • pinch ground cloves
  • 1 small red cabbage, shredded
  • 1 Tbsp maple or brown rice syrup
  • 3 Tbsp red wine vinegar (or red wine)
  • 2 pears, diced
  • ½ cup dried cranberries
  • ½ cup chopped almonds
  • salt & pepper, to taste


  1. Start by sauteing the onion, in the oil, then add the star anise, cinnamon, cloves and cook for about 3 minutes Add the cabbage, sprinkle a bit of salt over it, and cover for a couple of minutes until the cabbage has just started to wilt.
  2. Pour the vinegar or wine and syrup over the cabbage. Stir in the pears, cranberries and almonds, season with pepper if you wish, and serve.
