Meet your nutritionist: How and why I do what I do
Heather Nicholds, C.H.N.

Welcome! I’m so glad you found your way here!

I’m so excited to share with you how healthy eating can transform your life – it certainly changed mine!

I’ll be sharing some eye-opening information, as well as recipes that will show you how to incorporate nutrition concepts into your life – while being fun, easy and tasty!

First, I wanted to introduce myself; give you some of my background and my motivation for doing the work that I do.

My name’s Heather, and I’m a Registered Holistic Nutritionist. A lot of people ask me what that means, as ‘holistic nutritionist’ isn’t the most common job description.

Holistic nutrition is a focus on how foods and the body interact as a whole, and working to bring balance to your life in terms of what you eat, but also includes looking at how your lifestyle ties in to the big picture.

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I get in a funk where even things I enjoy start feeling like obligations…

The school where I trained, the Canadian School Of Natural Nutrition, defines R.H.N. (Registered Holistic Nutritionistâ„¢) as:

“A professional trained in Natural Nutrition and complementary therapies, whose principal function is to educate individuals and groups about the benefits and health impact of optimal nutrition. Mainstream medicine does not emphasize the significance of poor nutrition as a major cause of a wide range of health disorders. Although most people are aware of the benefits of sound nutrition, the range of conflicting information available to the consumer is often confusing. Holistic nutritionists guide their clients through the maze of information from books, magazines, supplements and diets on the market. They work with clients to identify and help correct the nutritional causes of diseases, and they are qualified to design personalized diet and lifestyle programs that optimize health.”

I haven’t always eaten as healthfully as I do now. In fact, when I was in university I didn’t know how to cook very well, and I knew basically nothing about nutrition. But once I started learning and implementing changes towards a healthier lifestyle, I noticed a huge difference in my energy and happiness.

Before coming to nutrition, I’ve had several careers. I went to university to take a program that integrated business management and training to be a commercial pilot. My first career was as a flight instructor, teaching people how to fly. I had a lot of fun, but realized that it wasn’t fulfilling my passion for helping people and making a difference in the world.

How To Remember That You're AwesomeWhen you’re trying to eat healthier, it’s so easy to get caught up in always focusing on what you can do better…

I moved on to become a financial planner, helping people with their financial life. This also wound up being somehow not quite fulfilling to me. I’d started becoming aware of all the environmental issues facing us and our planet, and moved to the non-profit side, working for the Green Party of BC. I found that immensely fulfilling, but also overwhelming and frustrating as change within the political system is really challenging.

As I said, when I started eating healthier, I noticed such an amazing difference that I wanted to share with others. I started with my family, sending emails with the things I was learning through reading and studying.

I decided I had to get a formal education in nutrition so that I could share this with more people. That’s when I went to CSNN, became a holistic nutritionist, and started sharing information and recipes through YouTube videos and my website.

This mini-course is based on that series of emails that I first sent to my family – the people I love most in the world, because I wanted to show them the kind of life that was possible. I’ve been tweaking it and improving it over the last 3 years, and I’ve had thousands of people go through.

What Do We Lose In The Quest For Perfection? It’s good to strive for healthiness, but in our quest for a ‘perfect’ diet we can sometimes lose sight of the bigger picture…

I’m not perfect, and I never will be. I’m still learning, but I don’t think any of us ever stop learning. I aim to share what I’ve learned already, and even more as we move through this journey together. I also learn a lot from you, so be sure to leave me comments along the way!

The most rewarding part of this for me is hearing about the difference it makes in your life. My goal is to show you how healthy eating can be fun, easy and tasty – but more importantly how it can make a huge positive shift in your life.

My hope is that this new awareness and energy spills over into other areas of life, and that you carry on the inspiration to others and start a tidal wave of positive energy.

All right, I know that sounds like a lofty goal, but I promise – I’ll be breaking it down into small, practical steps and simple recipes that will make these changes easy to incorporate into your life.

I’ll be in touch soon with your first lesson – easy ways to boost energy so you can get more out of your life!

Your Turn!

Now it’s your turn! Post a comment below to introduce yourself to me, and what motivated you to take this positive step in your life.

Recipe: Fresh Mango Salsa

Fresh Mango Salsa

I wanted to share one of my favorite recipes with you here, and after much deliberation (I have a lot of favorites) I decided that I had to share a mango recipe, because I’m a bit of a mango addict.

This is a fresh mango salsa that I make all the time through the summer, and is so versatile – try it on burgers, in wraps, as a dip or, a salad or whatever wonderful ways you can imagine…

Watch me make the salsa!
