5 vegan foods for healthy teeth and gums
Heather Nicholds, C.H.N.

Monday was my biannual trip to the dentist! I think of it like a spa trip for my teeth! In honour of that, here are some vegan foods for healthy teeth and gums.

Our bodies need certain nutrients to help build and maintain our teeth, and keep our gums healthy.

The most common recommendations I see for healthy tooth foods are dairy – milk, yogurt, cheese, etc… because of the calcium.

Luckily, there are loads of plant foods that have calcium, protein, iron, folate, vitamin C, omega-3, phosphorous, zinc, B vitamins and fiber – all nutrients that are important for the health of your teeth and gums.

What you put in your mouth can affect the health of your mouth

This post is not called “Top 5” because there are hundreds of plant foods that are excellent sources of one or more of those nutrients. These are just five foods for healthy teeth, and I kinda cheated on a few of them…

Plus I threw in a bonus one, because it’s not a food.

There were some questions from members about what to steer clear of, and what foods can cause tartar, so I covered those answers in the video as well.

Study about cranberries and anthocyanins related to tooth health: Cranberry polyphenols: potential benefits for dental caries and periodontal disease.

Eating these foods of course do not substitute for keeping a good daily routine of brushing and flossing, and visiting your dentist (whether you think of it as a tooth spa or a torture session…)
