Vegan Fish Cakes On Hot Cross Buns + Pirate Kite Flying For Good Friday

Good Friday in Bermuda involves brunch of fish cakes on hot cross buns and flying homemade kites at the beach. I decided I had to take part in both, and was thrilled to hear of a local caterer offering vegan fish cakes and hot cross buns through the local health food store!

These were amazingly tasty vegan patties. I’ve never had an actual fish cake before, but I had my seafood-eating friends sample a taste and they said it was quite close in texture.

Cheryl Kerr (aka Sistah Saute) makes wonderful vegan food for Cafe Eden, which is in the ABC Store (a health food store run by the Adventist Church) in Hamilton, Bermuda. These vegan fish cakes were a special order, but every day there’s a fantastic selection of delicious things.

Cheryl has generously shared one of her recipes, which is surprisingly simple and full of wonderfully healthy whole plant foods.

I enjoyed mine in a few different ways – on (vegan) hot cross buns for Good Friday with my tahini-dill mayo, heated on the BBQ, and as part of a massive salad.

Vegan Fish Cake Ingredients

  • 1 cup dry oatmeal
  • 1 cup Almond or Cashew Meal
  • 1 cup soy milk, or veg. broth
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cup cooked Mashed Potatoes
  • 1 tsp. Tarragon
  • 1 tsp. Thyme
  • 1 Tbsp. Kelp
  • 2 tsp. Parsley
  • 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • Squeeze lemon Juice or Lemon Pepper Seasoning
  • Dash of Cayenne Pepper (optional)
  • *Cedar Lake brand frozen Vegan Vege Tuna can also added as an option

Tahini-Dill Mayo Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp tahini
  • 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp water
  • 1 Tbsp nutritional yeast
  • 1 tsp dill weed
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

Vegan Fish Cake Directions

  1. Mix all ingredients together well and set aside for 5-10 minutes for oatmeal to absorb moisture.
  2. Form into patties and fry in a little oil or pan spray. If you prefer, you may bake these patties on a tray sprayed with oil spray until firm.
  3. Serve on sandwiches or as an entrée with your favorite sauce.

Tahini-Dill Mayo Directions

  1. Whisk the tahini and vinegar together until thick and smooth. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir until smooth.
  2. If you have a small blender, you can put everything in there and puree until smooth.
